There are some times in your life that can be pivotal, defining moments, ones that you will remember for the rest of your life. For Nick and Norah, this night is one of them.
Once in a while a film comes along that oozes charm and can be defined as a real date movie. 'Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist' is one of those movies. Here we have the story of a boy, Nick, trying to reconcile with his girlfriend, Tris, of six months by sending her mix CDs. Unbeknownst to him she has been giving them to her friend, Norah, who has been adoring the music he has been putting together for an age. With fate steadily drawing them together, it took a huge leap forward when Tris brought her new boyfriend and a group of school friends including Norah to see Nick's band and what happened next in an adventure in music and bourgeoning relationships.
Taking place over one, extraordinary night, the movie is filled with charm from the off. The reason for this is the casting of two of American best up and coming talents working in the industry at the moment, Michael Cera and Kat Dennings. After setting TV alight in the cult comedy 'Arrested Development' and then exploding on the big screen in 'Superbad' and 'Juno', Michael Cera is becoming the teenage star of his generation. He has a certain, geek charm about him that seems to draw in the audience, making you think he could be your friend. Kat Dennings is also on the way to becoming a real star for the same reason. After having small, supporting roles in films like 'The 40 Year Old Virgin', 'Charlie Bartlett' and 'The House Bunny', Dennings gets her chance to shine as Norah.
The supporting cast is also good and filled with up and coming stars. Aaron Yoo and Rafi Gavron have fun as Thom and Dev, Ari Graynor is hilarious as the drunk Caroline, Jay Baruchel pops up as Noah's ex Tal and Alexis Dziena is expertly cast as Nick's ex Tris.
'Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist' is a little gem of a date movie. Whether you are a teenager or an old romantic, there is much to enjoy here. While the running chewing gum gag might be a little too gross for some, this is still a story about a boy and a girl getting to know each other and having a ball doing so.
