When it comes to naming the best science fiction show to ever grace television screen, there is now only one show that every one should mention and that show is 'Battlestar Galactica'.
Back in 2003 when it was announced that former 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine' producer Ronald D. Moore was bringing cult 70s Sci-Fi show 'Battlestar Galactica' to the small screen fans of the original show were sceptical. With changes from the original formal such as humanoid Cylons, a mixture of politics, military and religious storylines and a female Starbuck, there was a certain amount of apprehension about the show but this was completely unfounded. While the original show will always have a place in fans hearts, Ronald D. Moore's version of 'Battlestar Galactica' will be thought of, not only as the best version of the show but as one of the best TV shows of all time.
After four unbelieveable seasons however, the show comes to an end and unlike many a series that has gone before, this is one that doesn't go out with a whimper. Since the show began in 2003, Ronald D. Moore and his creative team have been heading to a conclusion that could have been predicted, the goal of returning to Earth, but after the events of the mid season cliffhanger Earth was not the place for mankind's salvation. With the shock of this revelation, the Fleet, as well as the fans of the show, wondered what would happen next but the series delivered eleven episodes that are some of the best you will ever see and a finale that will be talked about for many years to come.
Each of the eleven final episodes allows Ronald D. Moore and this creative team to tie up storylines, bring character arcs to an end or full circle and complete the story of the rag tag fugitive fleet and the Cylons that have pursued them. Every character receives an ending, some unexpected, some emotional but all powerful and suitable for the characters you have become so attached to during the season.
It is the three part finale 'Daybreak' that the show will be remembered for and for a series finale, it has to be one of the best ever written. The finale is just as important as the beginning, even more so as it has to tie up everything that has gone before and do justice to a series that gained both critical and fan acclaim. You will never watch a show that is so satisfying, so uplifting, so joyful and so emotional, making this a pivotal moment in not only science fiction but television history.
'Battlestar Galactica' is the best science fiction show to ever grace the small screen and the final season shows why this programme has earned this accolade. With tremendous performances from Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff, Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Tricia Helfer, Grace Park, Aaron Douglas, Michael Hogan, Tahmoh Penikett and classic series star Richard Hatch, this is not just classic science fiction but classic television.
