Once in a while a new series makes a real impact in its first series and instantly becomes a much-loved classic, 'Dexter' is one of those shows.
Over the last few years TV has launched to critical acclaim only not to really hit with the general public. Shows like 'Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip', 'Firefly' and 'Arrested Development' have gone before there time but there has also been some classics that have really hit the mark from the off. Programmes like 'Lost', 'Heroes', 'Greys Anatomy' and 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation' have all become firm favourites and 'Dexter' is going to be one of those shows.
Based on the novels by Jeff Lindsay, the success of the show comes from the premise. Dexter Morgan is a Crime Scene Investigator who specialises in blood splatter patterns for the Miami Police Department but no suspects that he is also a serial killer who murders whose who escape justice. After been trained by his policeman father to vent his aggression and lust for blood on those who think they are above the law, Dexter is an emotionless killing machine who tries to live a normal life but is ruled by his murderous urges. Its only when Dexter is challenged by another serial killer called the Ice Truck Killer and the ex-husband of his show piece girlfriend Rita, do we see him lose control and possibly reveal his true self.
An excellent premise needs an excellent cast to bring this to life and 'Dexter' has just that. Leading the line is Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan. Best remembered for his role as David Fisher in 'Six Feet Under', Hall transforms himself into a cool, calculated serial killer and the ultimate anti-hero. He also narrates the show, revealing Dexter's innermost thoughts and injecting a lot of humour into the show. This will be the show he will be remembered the most for and is testament to his performance skills. The supporting cast is also extremely good with Jennifer Carpenter shining as Dexter's sister Deb, Julie Benz as the timid girlfriend Rita, Erik King is the suspicious Sergeant James Doakes, Lauren Vélez as commanding officer Lt. Maria Laguerta and James Remar as Dexter's father Harry Morgan seen in flashback.
'Dexter' is darkly comic, slightly twisted but very, very good and one of the best crime shows to come along in a very long time. While it maybe another C.S.I type show, which seem to be filling the schedules of late, this is a very different kind of show and one that is destined to become a classic

OVERALL
With only two commentary tracks for the twelve episode of the season, the extras for 'Dexter: Season One' is a little disappoint. With no behind the scenes footage, interviews or history of the character, this will come as a disappointment to a fan.
